A Surprising Terraced House
York has more than its fair share of period terraced houses; Victorian, Georgian or as with this example, early Edwardian. They vary from the flat fronted, two up-two down terrace which can still be found for less than £200k to five storey town houses selling in excess of £2million.
What I love about the humble terrace is how different they arse all, even on the same street, identical looking properties can reveal completely contrasting interiors. It's not often, as a property photographer, that we are surprised by what we find when we go through the front door, but this delightful little terrace was one of those rare treats. Originally a fairly ordinary three up, 3 down bay fronted terrace, with delightful views of the river Ouse, it had been transformed by its owners with a stunning and unique, brick barrelled extension to the rear to create a private internal courtyard and a series of spaces which flowed freely from inside to it. Polished concrete floors and worktops, brass taps and plywood banisters all came together to complete an extremely unusual and beautiful terrace. And from the front you'd have no idea on the treasures within.
